Getting Traction on Readership: Enterprise-Journal (McComb, MS)

Enterprise-Journal (McComb, MS)
Daily Circulation: 11,492
Sunday Circulation: 12,083

List the major steps you have taken in the last four years to increase readership. Please organize your response under four headings: content, brand, service, culture.

Content
We had a consultant come in and redesign the paper in late 2002. In doing this we looked at our content and added several things to the paper, such as a second Outdoors page and a Religion page on Sunday.

What is the most innovative, successful or noteworthy thing you have done on readership that you think other papers might learn from or want to emulate?
To be honest, we are just getting started on this. We're a good ways from doing anything innovative.

What is the most persuasive indication you have that your readership efforts are producing results?
People continue to comment that they like the new look of the paper and also the stories in it. Our circulation is up a little bit, but not where I want it to be.

What is the most important lesson you have learned as you have worked on readership in the last few years?
Service, service, service. Everything from the phone and the front desk to the carriers. We must do better.

What would you like to do on readership that you have not been able to do and why haven't you been able to do it?
As mentioned earlier, we're just getting started on this, so our results may be a good ways off. But I intend to focus on customer service.
