Getting Traction on Readership: The Daily News (Longview, WA)

The Daily News (Longview, WA)
Daily Circulation: 22,350
Sunday Circulation: 21,704

List the major steps you have taken in the last four years to increase readership. Please organize your response under four headings: content, brand, service, culture.

Content
We've become more people oriented, telling stories through people, and tried to get more local names and faces into the news columns. We also have made the paper easier to navigate, by anchoring specific content to the same places in the paper everyday.

Brand
randed ourselves as being Local-Local. Our logo carries the tagline...Real News....Real Local.

Service
We've really worked hard on improving our customer service from the front office, to our ISP, to circulation and classified. We're going through our city routes one-by-one and converting them from tube to door-step delivery.

Culture
Created a flat organizational chart and empowered employees to make more decisions and handle customer requests and complaints.

What is the most innovative, successful or noteworthy thing you have done on readership that you think other papers might learn from or want to emulate?
Gotten more names and faces into the paper....more "Refrigerator Art" as we call it.

What is the most persuasive indication you have that your readership efforts are producing results?
While circulation is only up slightly, there is more of a buzz in the community about our paper...the local stories we publish....our involvement.

What is the most important lesson you have learned as you have worked on readership in the last few years?
Be consistent....be local...local...local...and don't be so serious about yourself.

What would you like to do on readership that you have not been able to do and why haven't you been able to do it?
Better in-paper promotion.
