7 Items Every Avid Fisherman Should Own

If you’re starting to gain an interest in the sport of recreational fishing, there are some things you’ll need to equip yourself with in order to succeed. Every experienced fisherman has some sort of trick or system that he or she swears by, and there are some standards that just about anyone with a desire to fish should have. Here are seven things that every fishing enthusiast should own.

Fishing License

This one might seem pretty obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people neglect to go through the process of obtaining a license to fish. Most states require a license for anyone over the age of 16, and be sure to go over the important rules for your area.

Line, Reel, and Rod

These are the three main components of your fishing pole, and you won’t need anything too overly complex for starting out. For new beginners, it is recommended that you start with a spinning combo with medium action coupled with 10-pound monofilament line.

Sinkers and Hooks

Even with the best rod and reel, you won’t catch anything on your line without a hook. Hooks are relatively inexpensive, so try a variety of styles to see what works for you. Beyond the hooks themselves, you’ll need some sinkers to keep the bait below the surface of the water.

Bobbers

Bobbers are perfect for use with live bait fishing. You can opt for the standard plastic ball-shaped bobbers, or you can go for the thinner rod-style bobbers for a bit more sensitivity.

Hardbaits

These baits are something you won’t want to overlook if you plan on getting serious with the hobby. These include lipless cranks, crankbaits, topwaters, jerkbaits, and many other styles. There are tons of styles out there, but you’ll only need a deep depth bait, a shallow depth bait, and a topwater bait at first.

Swivels

These tiny tools are excellent for stopping the line from twisting out of control, and they help with setting up advanced line rigs. In many cases, swivels come with a snapping end piece that makes it easy to change out your baits on the line.

Pliers

Pliers are one of the most important tools in a fisherman’s tackle box. If you set up the rest of your gear properly, you’ll need to use these pliers quite a bit to remove fish from the line. The best type of pliers for this are needle nose, but you can really use any sort that you prefer. They are particularly helpful with removing hooks from the fish without injuring them any further. This is also a great way to protect your hands from toothy fish mouthes.
